A defunct New Jersey photography company that once refused to hand over thousands of wedding photos and videos has been ordered to pay more than $3 million in fines and restitution after a judge found it defrauded more than 3,000 customers.

The final judgment, released Tuesday in Morris County, came in a legal battle between the state and Celebration Studios that began when the Chester-based company went out of business in January 2008.

While brides and grooms may never see a restitution payment, they may see their wedding photos and video if the images were among the merchandise the state impounded during the course of the dispute. The court order sets a Jan. 13 deadline for the state Division of Consumer Affairs to distribute the pictures and videos.
